What is TRICARE Dental Program?
TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) is a voluntary dental insurance program that is administered by the United Concordia.
It is available to active duty family members, eligible national guard and national reserve, and their family members. Family members include the spouse of the active duty member and their child/children.
TRICARE Dental Program uses the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) to make sure you qualify. It is especially important to make sure all information is correct and up to date for each family member as an error can cause delays to your dental insurance.
Both sponsors and family members over the age of 18 can update contact information on DEERS.
Sponsors are the only ones who can add family members.
Sponsors can add family members if they can supply the required documents such as a marriage or birth certificate.
Two different costs come with the TRICARE Dental Program. They consist of monthly premiums and cost shares.
The monthly premiums are costs that are based on the sponsor’s military status and the number of people that are under the plan. Thus, rates will be different if there is only one person under the plan vs if there is a family under the plan.
Cost shares are based on the services that the sponsor has performed, their paygrade, and the location where they receive treatment.
The location where the sponsor or sponsor’s family receives treatment is factored in terms of CONUS (Continental U.S.) and OCONUS (Outside the Continental U.S.).
CONUS and OCONUS Service Area
CONUS service area includes the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You can visit any licensed dentist but visiting a TDP network dentist will help you save time and avoid any unwanted extra fees.
TDP network dentists have everything already set up and ready for you.
In other words, they will follow the TRICARE Dental Program rules and costs for care, they will file your claims for you, and there won’t be any hidden fees.
In the OCONUS areas, you can receive treatment from any licensed dental or orthodontic care, but it may be easier to see a TRICARE OCONUS Preferred Dentist (TOPD).
Like the CONUS service area, TRICARE OCONUS Preferred Dentists (TOPD) will also file claims for you and will only charge you the cost-share rate.

The monthly premium is a type of pay ahead program in which the sponsor will pay the premium for one month to receive coverage for the following month.
Do not miss any monthly payments. Missing any payments will cause your coverage to be terminated. You will not be able to re-enroll for another 12 months.
